Microneedling with
Platelet Rich Plasma
Kim Kardashian made vampire facials a thing in 2013 but what are they? Vampire facials are microneedling with the additon of PRP (platelet rich plasma) that is used to rejuvenate and stimulate the body’s own healing capacity to improve the skin’s appearance.
The Cutting Edge of Aesthetics: Microneedling w/PRP
PRP is combined with the SkinPen® microneedling system in our PRP microneedling procedure. The SkinPen® is the only microneedling device that has been approved and cleared by the FDA to be safe and effective for patients. PRP can be used for many purposes such as improving the presence of acne scarring, stimulating hair growth, decreasing wrinkles, reducing hyperpigmentation, evening discoloration, and reducing pore size.
Microneedling creates small puncture wounds in the skin stimulating the body’s natural healing response. The channels created allow the skin to absorb the PRP effectively and efficiently. PRP therapy stimulates enzymes that lead to faster healing and tissue regeneration. This combination of microneedling and PRP provides for excellent results. PRP induces collagen and stimulates the growth of new collagen which is essential in building smooth and more youthful-appearing skin.
PRP treatments use the patient’s blood to produce platelets and stem cells that promote and improve the skin’s appearance and collagen production.
The Process
- Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area
- Patients blood is drawn
- The blood is transferred to the centrifuge. This is how the PRP is collected.
- Numbing cream is removed
- PRP is brushed onto the skin and the SkinPen® microneedling procedure begins.
- The procedure itself lasts 20-30 minutes. Pain during the procedure should be minimal
- It’s normal to experience tightness of the skin in the days following the procedure but this is not painful.

Downtime
Microneedling requires minimal downtime. Redness, which is common, lasts about 48-72 hours.
The Skinpen® microneedling procedure is a three step process:
- It starts with inflammation. The microneedles pierce the skin which trigger the immune system to disinfect the tiny wounds, remove debris, and increase blood flow beginning the process of creating new tissue.
- Proliferation is step two. The micro-wounds that are created are rebuilt with new granulation cells that include collagen proteins. A new network of blood vessels also develops.
- Step three is remodeling. This is the process of remodeling the micro-wounds with new dermal tissues and blood vessels that are composed of rich elastin and collagen proteins. These proteins improve the skin’s youthfulness.
